Best places to have a coffee in Winchester, UK

Coffee Art

Just like historical landmarks, you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to enjoy a coffee in Winchester!

Below is a list of some of our favourite independent coffee shops in this beautiful Cathedral City.

The Winchester Orangery

Offering coffee, smoothies, cocktails, cake and brunch The Winchester Orangery is a popular hotspot; it’s really no surprise as it is located in the square overlooking the Cathedral. With seating in and out, pick your spot and enjoy delicious coffee at this beautiful venue.

Hoxton Bakehouse

Open for breakfast, lunch and brunch – and seriously good coffee, the Hoxton Bakehouse is worth a trip. Roasted in the nearby city of Southampton, Seadog coffee is the caffeine hit you’ll get from Hoxton. The indoor seating area isn’t huge but there are tables you can perch at to rest those weary legs. Have a furry friend with you? Dogs are welcome in for a puppuccino!

Josie’s

Josie’s has become a bit of a Hampshire favourite for breakfast and brunch – and Winchester is the second of the four independent family run coffee shops.

The coffee served is Josie’s own unique blend, roasted locally in Winchester. Other drink options include hot chocolates, juices, smoothies and milkshakes. So there’s something for all of the family!

Forte Kitchen & The Hatch

Just a stones throw away from No.2 St Peter Street you will find the Forte Kitchen restaurant and its sister café, The Hatch.

The Hatch is a casual space where you can sit in or out, or simply swing by and collect a coffee to go from the outdoor ordering point.

Handlebar Cafe

The Handlebar Cafe is a welcome sight after strolling up/down St Catherines Hill; welcoming walkers, dogs and a popular place for cyclists to stop and refuel!

The small cafe offers drinks and light snacks but it is the location that makes this hard to resist. Slightly out of town, situated at the foot of the beautiful St Catherines Hill and at the gateway to the South Downs it is well worth a visit.

Cabinet Rooms

Located on Jewry Street, opposite the Theatre Royal, The Cabinet Rooms is a specialty coffee shop featuring weekly guest roasts (alongside breakfast, lunch and cakes) by day and a delectable cocktail bar by night.

Described as ‘an inclusive space for discerning grown ups’, this beautiful venue is inspired by gentleman’s clubs and London cocktail lounges. It is well worth a visit for an ethically sourced coffee…or perhaps something stronger!

The Bridge Patisserie

A French inspired coffee shop situated at the bottom of the town centre, The Bridge Patisserie is the ideal spot if you are looking to grab a coffee before heading for a stroll along the Itchen Navigation or a laid back atmosphere awaits if you’re looking for a drink-in option.

Opened over 16 years ago, this is currently the oldest coffee shop in Winchester.

20 Bridge St, Winchester SO23 9BH

The city boasts all the usual chains; Costa, Starbucks and Caffe Nero but when you’re in the city of independents then we recommend you try somewhere more local and cosy!
